North-South Centre's mandate: provide a framework for North-South co-operation to increase public awareness of global interdependence issues and promote policies of solidarity in conformity with the aims and principles of the Council of Europe.

Targets: young people, Africa and the Mediterranean basin

Since its inception the North-South Centre has always advocated equitable and balanced globalisation based on policies of solidarity promoting peace, social cohesion, pluralist democracy and respect for human rights, the foundations for sustainable development.

So it has a very broad approach, but has made geopolitical choices to increase the effectiveness of its work, giving priority to Africa and the Mediterranean basin.

Young people are also one of its main target groups.

According to the North-South Centre’s statute, this involves the following activities:

- Giving a European dimension to multilateral co-operation initiatives for sustainable development, then serving as a framework for their implementation

- Improving education and information on global interdependence and solidarity strengthening ties between NGOs in the North and South

- Developing working relations with all international organisations concerned with global interdependence

- Acting as an interface between Europe and the South

That is why the North-South Centre is often described as the Council of Europe’s window to the world, because its purpose is to assert the validity of the values upheld by the Council beyond the European continent.

Objectives: strengthen the global youth partnership for sustainable development ; create a space to gather the various actors ; strengthen the capacity building of youth multipliers and policy-oriented action concerning youth and development.

Global youth Training Course
Objectives: strengthen the understanding of participants in relation to the complex process of globalisation; discuss the role, possibilities and limits of global youth work as a response to globalisation; reflect on the challenges identified during the course and ways for participants and their organisations to address them.

Africa-Europe Youth Summit
Objectives: increase young people’s participation in the Euro–African Cooperation and to reinforce youth work in Africa and Europe; influence the youth policy in Africa Euro Cooperation, particularly in the context of the EU-AU Summit of Head of States.

5th Africa-Europe Training Course for Youth Organisations
Objectives: strengthen the role of youth organisations as civil society actors and youth ability to organise and take action as well as to strengthen its political participation on poverty eradication and social cohesion; identify educational principles to promote the global citizenship of young people in Europe and Africa.

North-South Centre's participation in the Euro-Med Youth Covenant
Objectives: reinforce the North-South Centre’s contribution to the Council of Europe and European Union Euro-Med Partnership on youth policies, training on Human Rights Education and intercultural dialogue.
