Peking University Environment Fund (“PKUEF”) was established by Professor C S Kiang, the founding dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Peking University (“PKU”). PKUEF is situated within PKU. It has its roots in China but with a broad view scanning across the world; PKUEF’s main goal is to contribute to the sustainable development, peace and security of China and the world. PKUEF has carefully selected action plans with both Chinese characteristics and world impact in order to integrate resources and build a platform for solving the most severe environmental and resource problems.
PKUEF aims to build a leading think tank and the associated infrastructure in the environmental field, promoting the strength of environmental studies at PKU and China as a whole, while seeking to develop comprehensive solutions for the utilization of resource, economic, and sustainable development, environmental protection and social harmony for China and the world.
Vision:
What China can do for the world in 21st century?
Learning by doing, PKUEF seeks to extend the wisdom of rationalism, naturalism and humanism to create a realm of harmony between man and nature.
Principles:
Proactive; System Science, System Engineering and System Management; Innovation; Team Building.

Integrated Water Resource Management
Based on state of the art research and development from integrated water resource management (“IWRM”), PKUEF seeks to find comprehensive solutions for water, land and air problems in the watershed area. PKUEF stresses the systematic planning and coordination for all elements of the IWRM.
Northeast Asia’s Sustainability and Regional Security
PKUEF focuses on effective policy analysis and development strategies with regional cooperation measures. Non-traditional international relation research and practice will also be stressed to ensure the sustainable development, peace and security of Northeast Asia region.
Nature Conservation Leadership
With the goal of upholding harmony between man and nature, PKUEF seeks to strengthen the comprehensive integrated study of natural conservation. The social, economic and cultural aspects of nature conservation are integrated into a dynamic process involving all the possible stakeholders.
Green Building and Human Settlement
There is a pool of traditional Chinese architecture research data that can be used for case studies to employ new technology to promote technical and design innovation. PKUEF can also provide integrated social services and decision-making on green building and livable human settlement.
Regional Pollution and Global Climate Change
PKUEF seeks to form a national information service and decision support platform for regional pollution and global climate change through online real time quantitative observation. Accumulated basic data on the ecological system will contribute to the joint research of the International Ecosystem Network on regional pollution and climate change.
Environment and Health
PKUEF will integrate research on the environment and health with the goal of minimizing environment-related diseases and improving overall health levels. The impact to human body of environment and the socio-economic impact of environmental health are studied through mobile-lab and bio-information technology.
Environmental Extension Service
PKUEF will integrate educational resources available at Peking University and associated international partners to develop an environmental extension program that will promote the awareness of environmental issues and establish a knowledge base for sustainable development in China and the world.
