Chanan Development Association (CDA) is non-profit, non-governmental secular registered organization formed by a group of young professional activist in 2004 as Chanan Theatre Group after a comprehensive training workshop on “Theatre for Development” followed by two training workshops on “Interactive Theatre (Theatre for Social Change)” to work for the development of society particularly the most vulnerable, i.e. youth and women. Later in 2006 the need was felt to register the group to have a legal identity and to expand its work; therefore the name of Chanan Theatre Group was changed into Chanan Development Association (CDA) as the group got registered under Societies Registration Act 1860s. CDA has been involved in the sectors of health / reproductive health, education, human rights, peace and interfaith harmony since its inception.
It aims to provide opportunities to youth and women to explore, enhance and utilize their knowledge, capabilities and skills to improve their status in the society and earn appropriate recognition of their contributions. To achieve its objectives CDA initiated four programs named, “Healthy and Active Participatory Program for Youth (HAPPY), Women Empowerment through Learning, Commitment, Opportunity Management and Education (WELCOME), Child Awareness Program (CAP) and Harmony Education and Learning for Peace (HELP)” to raise the concerns of Youth, Women, Street Children and Minorities, respectively. Theatre is the major tool used by CDA to generate discussions on very sensitive issues and mobilize communities to bring change in their attitudes and practices.

As CDA is itself a youth led organization therefore we always encourage youth participation in all programs of the organization, right from the planning till the implementation and evaluation etc. We advocate the rights of youth particularly youth participation in the decisions belonging to their lives, e.g. marriage, studies, occupation etc and also sensitize policy makers through different advocacy campaigns to prepare youth friendly policies and ensure their proper implementation. We firmly believe that youth are more innovative, passionate and enthusiastic people and if we engage them in development activities and utilize their potentials for the positive cause then not only we can change the whole world but also we can reduce the curse of terrorism.
