The Community Access Program (CAP) is a Government of Canada initiative, administered by Industry Canada, that aims to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet and the skills they need to use it effectively. With the combined efforts of the federal, provincial and territorial governments, community groups, social agencies, libraries, schools, volunteer groups and the business community, CAP helps Canadians, wherever they live, take advantage of emerging opportunities in the new global knowledge-based economy. Under CAP, public locations like schools, libraries and community centres act as “on-ramps” to the Information Highway, and provide computer support and training.

CAP provides support funding for Community Centers providing free computer and Internet services to the public. These centers include schools, libraries, and non-profit organizations.
In some cases CAP provides IT and administrative support to these Community Organizations in the form of an Intern, through the Community Access Program Youth Initiative.

Youth internships are available for those youth wanting to work in the Information and Communication Technology and Community Development related feilds.
The CAP Youth Initiative is a great way for youth to move into the workplace. CAPYI offers its interns training workshops and opportunities to work and/or attend community development events.
Interns hired on with CAPYI and delegated to a community organizations in their areas, are often hired on with organization following the end of their CAPYI contract.
