ARTI is a registered scientific society, established in April 1996 by a group of scientists, technologists and social workers, to develop and transfer innovative, sustainable technologies to rural people for income generation and to improve their quality of life. In true spirit of its mission, ARTI undertakes research to study, develop, standardise, implement, commercialise and popularise innovative appropriate rural technologies with special emphasis on making traditional rural businesses more profitable and also on generating novel employment opportunities in rural areas.

Under the leadership of Dr. A. D. Karve, the institute started off with 9 research projects at different stages of completion, transferred from the project 'Centre for Application of Science and Technology for Rural Development (CASTFORD). To date, ARTI has completed over 50 projects sponsored by various funding agencies - both national and international. It has emerged as one of the internationally acclaimed R & D institutions working in the field of rural development through innovative appropriate technologies. We have now nearly 25 standardised and field-tested technologies to offer to rural entrepreneurs through our Rural Entrepreneurship Development Centre (REDC). Our sphere of activities is no longer restricted to Maharashtra, but has spread to other states including Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pardesh, Sikkim, Tripura and Kerala. Some of our technologies are also being tried out in other developing countries in Asia and Africa.
With its high-impact grass-root level work over the past decade, ARTI has established itself as an internationally recognised developer of innovative and appropriate rural technologies.

Students are encouraged to develop sensitivity towards our environment and learn about sustainable development through appropriate rural technologies by participating in our projects – carry out simple experiments, work on novel ideas, document their findings and even visit our field centres if need be. However, only a limited number of students can be provided such opportunities at our centres – based on our available on-field expertise and on students’ self-motivation.
In any case, we welcome volunteers who wish to spread the word about ARTI’s useful technologies and products amongst their neighbours and in their communities. It could be for improved cook stoves in your village, the Sarai cooking system for hutments near your residence or the compact biogas system for your residential society – we provide information and support demonstrations as per requirement and demand.
Like-minded people/organizations can participate in disseminating information by also providing ARTI a platform in their public functions and forums to reach out to masses.
