Greenpower Canada is a Toronto-based non-profit youth organization that inspires and empowers young people to take leadership locally and globally to achieve socio-economic development through conservation and environmental initiatives. As a youth led and operated organization, Greenpower ascribes to the fundamental philosophy that our youth is an opportunity to take a leadership role in issues that we feel passionate about.

Consistent with its youth empowerment mandate, Greenpower is acting globally to preserve endangered species and alleviate poverty. The primary focus is a Tiger Conservation and Human Development program in the East India state of Orissa. The organization is working to preserve some of the most endangered species in the world through innovative and strategic interventions that empower human populations in ways that will allow them to reduce their pressure on ecosystems and wildlife.

To date, Greenpower has established a rural energy program to promote socio-economic development in Orissa, India as well as conservation awareness activities. In the spring of 2006, Greenpower will work with REACH India to expand a school for disabled children Pairadanga, West Bengal. In the spring of 2007, Greenpower will work with local partners to establish a primary school in a buffer zone village of Similipal Tiger Reserve in Orissa. These innovative schools will supplement the traditional curriculum with a life-based and livelihood oriented environmental education program. Therefore, once established, the schools, located in a strategic ecological regions, will not only provide a key to breaking the cycle of poverty, but a key to breaking the cycle of unsustainable dependence on the forests.

Since its inception in 2001, Greenpower has reached thousands of youth through numerous conferences and workshops. Some local activities include: our annual Earth Day conferences, annual “Tiger Run” community walk-a-thons, a youth directed and performed docudrama and numerous presentations....

Since its inception in 2001, Greenpower has reached thousands of youth through numerous conferences and workshops. Some local activities include: our annual Earth Day conferences, annual “Tiger Run” community walk-a-thons, a youth directed and performed docudrama and numerous presentations.

As an important extension of its student empowerment agenda, Greenpower will facilitate the birth of a Student Environmental Network for High School student groups across the GTA. The goal of the project will be to foster student leadership, action and capacity. The program’s investment in the development of leadership skills and personal growth will contribute to building confident leaders who will supply social and economic ingenuity to our communities for many years to come.
