The International Women's Rights Project (IWRP) was founded in 1998 to strengthen the capacity of women's NGOs and to influence the implementation of international human rights standards, for the benefit of women, through research and evidence-based advocacy. The IWRP is currently affiliated with the Centre for Global Studies at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. We operate on a project-by-project basis, with funding from private and governmental sources.

The first major project of the IWRP was the pilot CEDAW Impact Study, developing impact analysis methodology with NGO correspondents in 10 countries, resulting in a comparative analysis of CEDAW on national systems. Our most recent focus has been on our partnership with the Afghan Women's Organization (located in Canada and Afghanistan) in capacity-building for women's leadership and governance, and in developing this as a model for other communities. Current projects in development are women's constitutional rights in the Bahamas; a partnership with women's NGOs in the Ukraine; developing the Afghan women's young leadership project as a model for women in Iraq; and developing vehicles to promote joint ventures within and among communities that generate, use and transfer knowledge, including legal literacy, to strengthen evidence-based advocacy initiatives needed to build healthier communities in Canada and other countries with an emphasis on gender equity.
