Through IRSAM's Global Ambassadors project, small groups of McGill students enter high school classrooms across Montreal to present dynamic workshops on world affairs. The overriding goal of the project is to reduce apathy and ignorance among high-school aged kids, with special regard to world affairs and the United Nations. Those of us involved with Global Ambassadors also hope to foster a true understanding of (and appreciation for) the spirit of multilateralism among young(er) people.

The workshops are presented to students in grade 10 or 11, and take place in two parts. The first session presents content and information about one of 5 available themes: Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development, Human Rights, The United Nations, or MUN-prep*. Global Ambassadors...

The workshops are presented to students in grade 10 or 11, and take place in two parts. The first session presents content and information about one of 5 available themes: Millennium Development Goals, Sustainable Development, Human Rights, The United Nations, or MUN-prep*. Global Ambassadors volunteers engage students in dialogue to uncover what they already know, and use discussion and activities to build on this knowledge. During the second session, students are challenged to put their knowledge to use by participating in a simulation of the United Nations, and debating the very topic about which they've just learned.

The effectiveness of the Global Ambassadors program is due in great part to the wonders of peer education - those presenting the workshop material are a scant few years older than their students, which creates an engaging and open learning environment. Global Ambassadors volunteers are also all truly passionate about the material they present, and present their workshops from the perspective of one engaged in ongoing activity within the field.
