Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) is a young, growing charitable organization based in Toronto that uses innovative and proven techniques to reduce human rights abuses in the African countries we work in. JHR works by building the capacity of the media to effectively report on human rights issues and create a culture of rights. Our work pressures abusers to stop and empowers victims to fight back.
For example, one of many issues that JHR works on is creating awareness of the human rights related to HIV/AIDS. We recognize the linkages between HIV/ AIDS, poverty, discrimination and human rights and encourage accurate, extensive, and honest coverage on the issue. In the past, some of JHR's HIV/AIDS projects have included working with African NGO's promoting the rights of those living with HIV/AIDS.

In Canada, JHR has established 19 Chapters (or clubs) at universities and colleges across the country. Students involved in Chapter activities are either in journalism programs, or have an avid interest in journalism or human rights issues. To date, JHR actively engages over 10% of Canada's journalism students in human rights reporting and community activism. Currently JHR is also working on expanding the Chapter program to universties in the United States.
There are numerous opportunities for young people to get involved with JHR. You can join a Chapter in your area, or establish one yourself if your school doesn't have one already. JHR also has volunteer and internship opportunities for university students and recent graduates. Please check our website www.jhr.ca for details.
