Its goal is to offer new students the chance to experience debating and to organize the important number of debaters in Northern Greece who simply, upon entering university, are left without resources and a common platform to debate.

In a first stage, its activities aim in promoting debating in the Aristotle University, raising competitiveness of the university debate team and providing all Greek university debaters with a common platform for debating. Representatives from almost every department participate in these activities. Among these activities, there are frequent meetings in the grounds of the university – two per week during the spring semester. In addition, the society has its own website on the internet, www.debating.gr, which is frequently updated with announcements, debate material & tutorials, photos etc.
In a second stage, it aims at organizing national debate tournaments in Greek with high quality and wide coverage from the media. In 23-24 April 2004 the Aristotle University 1st Greek National Debate Tournament was organized with the support of Aristotle University Students’ Week 2004 and was the first debate tournament in Greece that addresses Greek university debaters. The invitational format was used, there were 32 participants (16 teams), 10 judges and over 15 people were involved in the organizational part. The final match had an audience of about 70-90 people.
In 9-10 April 2005 the Aristotle University 2nd Greek National Debate Tournament was held with the support of Aristotle University Students’ Week 2005. There was a surprising increase in the tournaments “numbers”: The invitational format was used, there were 56 participants (28 teams), 17 judges and over 30 people were involved in the organizational part. The final match was attended by professors, media and an audience of more than 250 people.

Aristotle University Debate Society has enjoyed strong support from students, debate “veterans” and professors in its two years of action. Its future goals are to strengthen its administrative organization and presence in the university, to experiment with the opportunities offered by information technology and to organize the 3rd Greek National Debate Tournament.
